One of my mom's friends bought me a dress at a local boutique and it was hideous. They had quilts for the same price, but they were pretty awful, too. I'd say the whole store was terrible -- it was full of seersucker and other hoity-toity clothes (all of which could and were monogrammed). They had canvas picture paintings for $100+ for a 14x14. There was one blanket that was decent, but it was $90+ and tiny. I was irritated that someone would buy something from a store where my only choices were other ugly/expensive items. I ended up getting a wipe holder that would have the baby's name embroidered onto it.
I had also been given a diaper bag from my registry that I had to return. This was my fault for registering for a diaper bag I'd never seen in person. Anyway, we go to Buy Buy Baby and hand it to them, then go spend what seems like forever to pick out a new diaper bad. The one I originally wanted was just huge, my second choice just seemed heavy, then I fell in love with one $100 more than what I was returning. However, I finally found a good one that was $20 less than the bag I was returning. We found the diaper genie bags to help cover than $20 and went to check out. It was when the cashier pulled out my original diaper bag and I saw the "Babies R Us" receipt that I felt like an idiot. I decided to buy what I wanted regardless and we were on our way.
We were so pooped that we just returned the Babies R Us items for store credit. Here's another moment I became irritated because the vomit-pink outfit we took back (from the shower) was on clearance... for $1! She asked if I wanted to keep it anyway and I said, "No, I'd rather have a dollar."
Similar situation at Kohl's: Hideous outfit to return and it's on clearance. I buy a blanket and stuffed monkey and shell out some dough.
I am finding it hard to be grateful to people who put in effort to get me things that I don't want AND get them from stores that I wouldn't want to go inside. Plus, the junk they buy is on clearance for some embarrassing amount! I spend more on gas trying to get rid of this junk I'm given so I can have things I will actually need!
I've registered for EXACTLY what I want and will use and put on a few things so people can get a sense of what I like, but moreover, I've registered at a number of stores, many of which are very common.
At least I got to talk to Tyler today. He'll start things tomorrow and the quality of the call was surprisingly good.
I also got a pedicure, but it made my back hurt worse than it already was... so yay, but boo.
